Sony and Facebook are ramping up the promotional drum for their virtual reality headsets in the run-up to the Christmas season. Both companies have released promotional ad trailers for their top selling virtual reality headsets including Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift S and PlayStation. In these trailers, both companies advertise virtual reality as a gaming medium that blurs the line between the physical and the digital reality.
Sony has a brand new trailer for PlayStation VR which taps into the imagination of the audience. The virtual reality headsets can be seen again and again but the scenes from the real games are missing. The implication here is that the fascinating virtual reality content can only be conveyed through a virtual reality headset and not traditional media.
In Sony’s promotional trailer, VR is more than a video game and users can see it through virtual reality glasses where users are able to see real-world experiences that they’d not otherwise experience. What is real or virtual is no longer apparent according to the PSVR trailer.
Sony is also planning massive discounts on its virtual reality products for the Christmas season. In the US, Sony is offering three PSVR bundles. However, nothing has been announced for the European market yet. In September, Sony had introduced the new Megapack with the games Resident Evil 7, Astro Bot, Skyrim VR and Everybody’s Golf. Should the sales pick up for Sony, the PSVR shipments should surpass the 5 million mark this year.
Facebook’s trailer for Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S are also in the same vein as that of PSVR. They also emphasize the adage “Defy Reality”. In this trailer, the old-fashioned physical reality is portrayed as an annoying nerd that has been outdated by the cool virtual reality.
Unlike Sony, the Oculus trailer shows clippings from the iconic virtual reality games such as Beat Saber, Superhot VR, Vader Immortal and Echo Arena but these are shown as mixed reality where the players appear with their real body in virtual reality. Again, in this case, the boundaries between reality and the virtual world have been deliberately blurred. Curious: Echo Arena for Quest is postponed for next year and will not be released in time for Christmas.
The PC VR headset Oculus Rift S has also been covered with a trailer and the appendix “PC Power”. In this trailer, Oculus is showing more conventional excerpts from Rift-exclusive titles like Asgard’s Wrath, Lone Echo and Stormland that are unlikely to appear in Oculus Quest.
However, with the Oculus Link cable, Quest users are able to transform their standalone virtual reality devices into PC VR headsets and get access to these games. A powerful gaming PC will be required for this.
No Christmas discounts have been announced yet for both Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S but the ad trailers are a harbinger of things to come. Follow up on Virtual Reality Times to catch up on these deals when they arrive.
