Quill Theater recently launched on Oculus Quest enabling users to view immersive and animated stories on virtual reality that have been made using Facebook’s creation tool Quill. Quill is already available on Oculus Rift.

Quill Theater works in concert with Oculus TV to transport the user into the Quill creations. It has a massive library that is updated on a regular basis to include new stories and works.

Quill is the parent app and the content creation counterpart for the Theater. It was first launched as the Facebook’s version of Google’s art tool Tilt Brush. The animations creation feature was added over time, allowing for the creation of short animations. Early this year, the tool saw a major 2.0 update which expanded it to allow for the creation of more complex stories that have transitions between the shots along with synchronized sound among lots of other features. Until now, Quill was only available on the Rift platform.

With the Quill Theater, Oculus Quest users will now be able to view and interact with some of the best stories and content to have emerged from the Quill tool on the Rift platform. These are immersive animations that are also fully six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF), according to a description on Oculus Store. It will therefor be possible for users to move positionally within the art. Users can also pause the Quill Theater stories at any time.

Oculus Quest has mobile processors which means we are unlikely to see the full Quill creation app running on the standalone device although it is possible to run it from a high-powered PC via an Oculus Link. The launch of Quill Theater is a sign that Facebook is still keen on further improving the Quill ecosystem after it sold the Medium sculpting toolset to Adobe.
