OnePlus boss says wireless charging would be a minus for the upcoming OnePlus 7

The OnePlus 6T may still be a relatively new phone, but it’s now time to look ahead to what we assume will be called the OnePlus 7. While OnePlus phones have been getting more expensive, the fact is that they’re still far cheaper than other flagship phones out there — making the upcoming OnePlus 7 even more exciting.

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming OnePlus 7 so far.

Wireless charging?

While OnePlus phones have commonly competed with far more expensive phones by including flagship-level specs, there’s one flagship area no OnePlus phone has bothered to tread yet: Wireless charging. Will the OnePlus 7 be the first OnePlus to include the convenient tech?

According to OnePlus CEO Pete Lau at MWC 2019, no, it will not. As far as Lau is concerned, wireless charging is an inferior version of cable charging, and isn’t something OnePlus is looking to implement. OnePlus prides itself on its superfast cable charging, and boasts of being able to refill 50 percent of a battery in just 20 minutes — and when compared to this blistering speed, it’s simply not worth adding the convenience offered by wireless charging.

What will the OnePlus 7 look like? Once again, OnePlus may adopt a new look for its phone, and a leak suggests the phone may use a slider mechanism to hide the front camera, allowing a full-screen display without a notch. We have seen this approach on the Honor Magic 2, and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. An image, published by SlashLeaks, shows two phones in a plastic casing, one with the “slider” mechanism closed, and the other with it open. Cutouts for the camera and its sensors rise above the screen and speaker.

Because the actual phone is not pictured, and previous leaks haven’t given anything away, this is still speculation. It may simply be one of the ideas OnePlus has experimented with for the OnePlus 7, and the final design may not adopt this style.

Before this, Twitter leaker Ishan Agarwal posted an image of Pete Lau and other OnePlus executives in a meeting, and on a screen, we can see a red device with a Moto-esque camera module. It’s hard to tell exactly how many camera sensors are in that module, but it seems like there could be as many as four.

It’s important to note that this may not be the OnePlus 7 — it could instead be OnePlus’ upcoming 5G phone, which will launch in Europe in 2019.

While we don’t know all the specs set to show up in the OnePlus 7, we do at least know a few. At Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to the stage to announce that the Snapdragon 855 would be used in the next OnePlus flagship phone.

Apart from that, we expect to see at least 6GB of RAM and at least 128GB of storage. The display will likely be a step up from the OnePlus 6T as well — it could come in with a 1440p display, rather than the 1080p display on current OnePlus phones.

Price and release date

So when will we see the new OnePlus 7? The OnePlus 6 was announced in May 2018, so we think the OnePlus 7 will be released around that time, too, though it could be pushed back a little until June. As far as pricing goes, the OnePlus 6T came in at around $550, so it’s likely the OnePlus 7 will be around that price as well — if not a little more expensive.

We’ll update this article as we hear more about the OnePlus 7, so stay tuned.

Updated on February 28, 2019: The OnePlus 7 will not be the first OnePlus phone to have wireless charging.
