This week marks the first-year anniversary since the double launch of the PC-based Oculus Rift S and the standalone Oculus Quest virtual reality headsets. During the anniversary, Facebook announced that it had sold over $100 million worth of apps and games since the launch of headset.
However, Facebook is yet divulge information on the number of Quest headsets that it has sold to date. The company has revealed some sales data that offers an idea on the extent of the headset’s performance so far as well as the massive opportunity that the robust ecosystem now provides VR developers.
According to the Facebook data, Oculus Quest users have so far spent $100 million on the apps and games since the headset’s launch on May 21st 2019. This is an impressive first year performance for an industry that has so far performed below expectations. This information along with the details on the content revenue milestones that Facebook has shared in the past year offers a clearer picture on how the headset and the Quest app store are performing so far.
Christmas Day alone registered $5 million spent on virtual reality content across all Oculus headsets. Facebook is yet to provide a platform by platform breakdown of the revenue sources between Oculus Rift, Quest and Go.
The average price for the most popular apps sold on Quest is $19 so with just over $100 million in VR content sales, we can estimate that approximately 5.2 million apps were sold on the Quest platform during its first year.
The $100 million in revenues also offers a rough clue on the number of Quest headsets that have been sold so far. If we can guess the average content spend for every customer, it is possible to work out a rough estimate of the number of Oculus Quest units that were sold.
According to a Road to VR analysis, the average content spend per customer is about $100 for games costing $25 each. At $100 per customer and with $100 million in revenues, we can guesstimate that Facebook has sold about one million Oculus Quest headset units so far.
Should that prove accurate, then it would be an impressive performance for the standalone virtual reality headset. However, it is still performing way below the PlayStation VR which has so far sold more than 5 million units.
Oculus Quest sales in the recent months have been constrained by stock shortages that were occasioned by the high demand and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the production schedules although extent to which this impacted the shortages isn’t clear yet.
On a positive note, the Oculus Quest stocks have been picking up in the recent weeks.
