Some of the main weaknesses of the Oculus Quest headset are its limited battery life, hardness and the weightiness of the device. There is a new accessory pack that aims to correct these weaknesses.
The VRNRGY Power Pack is an extra battery that can attach to the back of the VR headset and connects to Quest via a cable. It is an auxiliary battery pack that is designed to uniquely fit to the back of the headset. The pack can be ordered from the company’s website.
The Oculus Quest headset generally offers only up to about 2 hours of gaming battery life on a single charge. When both the headset and the VRNRGY are fully charged, the VRNRGY manufacturer is promising a tripling of the gaming battery life thereby providing users with up to 6 hours of VR gaming.
Apart from extending the battery life, the VRNRGY Power Pack will also act as a counterweight to the frontal strength of the headset case by placing a battery at the back of a headset that is front-heavy. This will result in greater wearing comfort. The Power Pack will be positioned inside the triangle opening which grips the crown of the wearer’s head. While the weightiness of the headset often occurs as a result of users misfitting the top straps and the side to the shape of their heads, the counterweight provided by the battery pack will allow for ease of fitting and adjustment.
The power pack will be strapped in place by a “breathable” neoprene strap. The strap is deliberately designed around the Oculus Quest form factor. The Power Pack’s battery is based on Samsung’s Li-Ion technology which delivers 7,000mAh.
When the battery and the virtual reality headset are fully charged, the combined charge can power the headset from the current two to six hours of virtual reality gaming or eight hours of media consumption (video streaming) without interruptions. This is a significant improvement!
An Affordable All-in-One Solution
The regular price for the Power Pack is $50 but it can be ordered directly from the VRNRGY website for a discounted price of $35. VRNRGY is also selling a protective front travel cover for Quest headset for $20 but this is currently available for a discounted price of $15.
The idea of an extra battery attached to the headgear is not new. Oculus Go users have experimented with self-made solutions since the launch of the standalone of the virtual reality headset in the spring of 2018. The trend has continued with Oculus Quest where users have experimented with various cool accessories from 3D printers. The VRNRGY is affordable, packs a lot of juice to last you six to eight hours and it is also visually appealing and comfortable to wear.
