HTC’s Vive Cosmos virtual reality headset was plagued with a number of performance and operational issues when it came out early this month, getting it off to a rocky start. There were the low-light tracking problems for which the company soon released a hot fix that helped improve tracking performance over a range acceptable lighting scenarios. However, in spite of the fix, there were still some pending tracking issues with the headset.
There were also issues with the controller acquisition, particularly in the limits of the camera field of view as well as when devices cover one another. Now HTC has released a software update with tracking improvements for Vive Cosmos that address the constellation of complaints raised by users so far. It is already available in beta version. Users can activate the beta updates in the advanced settings of the HTC Vive Console app. The software update will address the various tracking issues that now plague the Vive Cosmos VR headset.
HTC Was Intent on Continuously Improving Vive Cosmos Tracking
Following the tepid reviews it received after the launch of its latest PC VR headset, HTC had promised it would continue improving the tracking capabilities of the headset through software updates.
HTC says it wants to use the feedback received from the VR community to continuously improve the tracking performance of the headset and controllers. It had promised a late October beta update that would rectify the tracking performance of the headset in low-light conditions as well as its prediction performance for fast movements. The update would also reduce the shaky tracking experienced by users.
The latest tracking update hasn’t been widely tested yet by the user community but it should address many of these issues including improvement in tracking in low lighting and in high ambient lighting environments. It also introduces better positional recovery for the controllers so that the controllers disappear as late as possible or not at all when they leave the field-of-view (FOV) and reappear very quickly when they are returned to the field-of-view (FOV).
HTC is also promising the update will deliver better near-field headset/controller tracking which will significantly improve the archery mechanics in VR games. This is currently difficult because the controllers are coming very close to the headset’s inside-out tracking cameras thereby making them hard to position accurately.
With the near-field tracking, it is expected that the Vive Cosmos controllers will be able to reliably detect as close to the other virtual reality headset as possible which will deliver a much more improved archery in virtual reality games. If it will be possible to move the controllers slowly such that they cover one another, then users will have fewer dropouts following the latest Vive Cosmos software update.
HTC will include compatibility for the Vive wireless adapter in the next software update. In case you already have an adapter, then you will have to purchase a new battery.
The Vive Cosmos’ tracking performance is still below par when played under optimal conditions. It remains to be seen how much HTC will accomplish through a software-based approach to improving the tracking performance.
Apart from this update, HTC also released the Vive Cosmos 1.0.5 update last week which was said to provide improved room setup performance for low light environments. It also solved the USB audio driver compatibility problem which affected users who had certain system configurations.
