“One thing – the guys here will probably laugh if they see this – but I’ve been telling all the artists nonstop to go watch Handmaid’s Tale… The composition, the color, and just the cinematography and symbolism is just off the charts,” Hanbeck says. “So, I watched that and I’m like, ‘Wow we gotta find a way to get more of this stuff in Gears 6.’”

The quote appears around the 27-minute mark of the conversation. Hanbeck was asked about some of his artistic inspirations, particularly for Gears 5 which was somewhat of a visual departure from previous Gears of War games. Hanbeck responded by naming some video game inspirations like Destiny 2, but also inspirations from TV shows like Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
While this isn’t an official confirmation for Gears 6, it’s very likely the franchise will continue with sequels. And the interview gives us an idea of what might be coming down the pipeline for the series, visually and thematically. If Hanbeck gets his way and more people on the art team watch The Handmaid’s Tale, there could be more dystopian, industrial compositions coming to Gears 6.
