Lenovo continues to bet big on virtual reality in spite of past flops. A new FCC filing shows “Lenovo VR3030S” which the company docs show as its upcoming standalone virtual reality headset.

The headset will be like Lenovo’s previous standalone model the Mirage Solo (with Daydream) or Oculus Quest, working without the need for physical tethering to a PC or smartphone as the processing power will be built into the device. It is however, still unclear what platform Lenovo’s new standalone headset will be run on. The Mirage Solo was based on the now defunct Google Daydream platform. Lenovo’s new headset should presumably run on a different platform such as the Valve’s Steam VR or Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality headset. News outlets also mention that Facebook’s Oculus platform could also be a possibility.

No further details on the standalone VR headset have been revealed in the FCC filing.

Lenovo has a long and mixed history dabbling in virtual reality. The company was also behind the Oculus Rift S headset which is currently playing second fiddle to the popular standalone Oculus Quest VR headset. With the introduction of the Oculus Link connection, some analysts have even predicted that the Rift S may as well be obsolete in a few years as users opt for the versatility of Quest which now offers both a standalone and PC-based functionality via Link connection. Sony also did a licensing deal with Lenovo which is why both PlayStation VR and the Oculus headset have a similar headband.

There is also the possibility that Lenovo could submit the FCC certification documents for a new set of virtual reality controllers. Lenovo’s Mirage Solo relied on the Google-built wands even though Lenovo eventually ended up developing its two button sticks for the second-generation Mirage AR headset in collaboration with Disney.
