Seven new EVs to be launched in Indian market in 2020

Most of the EV headlines tend to focus on California, China and Europe, but the electromobility revolution is quietly gathering momentum in India, a potentially enormous market where the government has proposed substantial EV incentives. At the 2020 Auto Expo, which is to be held in February in Greater Noida, no less than seven new pure EVs will be on display. As Indian automotive news outlet GaadiWaadi reports, several of these seem likely to emerge from the concept stage and make it to showrooms within the next year or two.

Tata Motors will be showing two new EVs: electric versions of the Nexon SUV and Altroz hatchback, both based on Tata’s new Ziptron EV technology.

Maruti Suzuki is currently testing an electric version of
the Wagon R in various climates around India. This will be the company’s first
EV for the Indian market, and is expected to have a driving range of around 200

Mahindra is working on an electric version of its XUV300 sub-compact SUV, which it says will have a 40 kWh battery pack, 130 hp of power and a range of 300 km. The company showed its eKUV100, an electric version of its compact “Kool Utility Vehicle,” at the last edition of the Auto Expo in 2018, but the launch was delayed. An updated eKUV100 will be on display in 2020.

MG, the iconic British brand (now with Chinese owners), introduced
its eZS
, a small electric SUV, in China earlier this year. The eZS on
display in India will have a 44.5 kWh battery pack and a range of around 400 km.

Finally, Kia’s Soul EV will make its official Indian debut at
the Auto Expo. It sports a 64 kWh pack, 204 PS of power, 395 Nm of torque, and a
range of over 450 km.
