Porsche to join Formula E electric racing championship, 2019-2020 calendar announced

The Formula E electric racing championship has announced its calendar for the 2019-2020 season: 14 races in 12 cities on 4 continents, beginning in November in Ad Diriyah, Saudi Arabia and winding up in July 2020 in London.

However, the big news is that Porsche
will be fielding an electric racing team
. The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E
Team recently unveiled its Gen2 99X Electric racer. The 99X Electric has a
standardized Formula E-approved chassis and battery, along with a Porsche
E-Performance Powertrain. It employs the same 800-volt technology used in the Porsche
Taycan
. The race car will serve as a development platform for future electric
production models.

“In hindsight, we laid the foundations for Porsche’s future
involvement in Formula E during the LMP1 project,” said Malte Huneke, Technical
Project Leader Formula E. “We used the insights gained during that time in the
development of the Porsche Formula E powertrain. We focused on building a
highly effective powertrain with the highest level of efficiency.”

The Porsche 99X Electric will make its first official
appearance in mid-October at the Formula E test in Valencia, Spain.
