BMW is seeking new solutions for EV battery cooling that can provide improved cooling capacity during fast charging as well as a reduction in noise and vibration emissions. BMW will consider both early-stage and mature solutions, and will work to evaluate and develop solutions that meet its criteria.
BMW’s key criteria for solutions include an operating temperature range of -20° to 45° C, noise production below 35 dBA, the ability to implement heat flux to ambient air, and scalability to cooling powers exceeding 20 kW during fast charging with 200-300 kW. Peak cooling capacity is only necessary during fast charging.
BMW will not consider passive cooling solutions requiring a high temperature gradient between the battery surface and ambient temperature, solutions that are harmful to the environment, or solutions that have high service and maintenance requirements.
Proposals are due March 7, 2019.
