AKASOL introduces new batteries for commercial vehicles

German battery maker AKASOLhas announced several new Li-ion battery solutions which it plans to begin mass-producing in the next 6 to 12 months.

The company’s new flagship battery, the AKAModule CYC, features liquid-cooled battery modules, and claims specific energy of 221 Wh/kg. AKASOL says its new modules are scalable and can be integrated into various system designs at the pack level. The system also supports fast charging up to 1C, which meets the C-rate requirements of currently available fast chargers for commercial vehicles.

AKASOL will start sample operation for the AKASystem AKM CYC
by the end of 2019, followed by serial production in summer 2021. EV makers can
equip EVs with battery capacities between 600 and 1,000 kWh depending on the
vehicle size.

In mid-2020, AKASOL will also begin serial production on the second generation of its AKASystem OEM PRC. The company says the new generation offers over 33% higher energy density and achieves approximately 400 kWh of installed capacity, all in the same installation space. The system can also achieve charge rates of 2C and handle fast charging up to 500 kW.

AKASOL will also begin manufacturing AKARack, a new 48 V battery solution for construction vehicle and marine applications. The AKARack is a small 19-inch liquid-cooled battery system that comes with 6.5 kWh of capacity, can achieve C-rates of up to 2C. AKASOL plans to make the AKARack available as a high-voltage solution at the end of 2020.

AKASOL President Roy Schulde said, “The electrification of commercial vehicles is accelerating tremendously at the moment, so it’s the perfect time for our expansion.”
