Scandlines installs Norsepower’s wind-powered rotor sail on hybrid ferry


Danish ferry operator Scandlines has signed an agreement with Norsepower, a Finnish clean tech and engineering company, to install its Rotor Sail Solution onboard the M/V Copenhagen, a hybrid passenger ferry.

Operating between Germany and Denmark, the M/V Copenhagen belongs to Scandlines’ already-existing fleet of hybrid ferries, which combines diesel and battery power. Since 2013, the ferry operator has invested more than €300 million in building and retrofitting ferries from conventional diesel to hybrid power.

The Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor – a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind energy to propel a ship. When wind conditions are favorable, it enables the electric propulsion thrusters and center propeller to be throttled back, reducing emissions.

The route between Germany and Denmark is almost perpendicular
to the prevailing wind, which gives Scandlines favorable conditions for using
Rotor Sails on the ferry crossing.

Scandlines will begin preparations for the retrofit in
November 2019 and has scheduled the installation for Q2 2020. The large-sized
Norsepower Rotor Sail unit is 30 m in height and 5 m in diameter.

Scandlines CEO Søren Poulsgaard Jensen said, “By installing
a Rotor Sail, we can reduce CO2 emissions on the Rostock-Gedser
route by four to five percent.”
