The developers of Beat Saber, the hit virtual reality rhythm game, have just released a free early build of the game dubbed “Beat Saber Origins” to observe its first anniversary.

The Beat Saber Origins is a three-year-old build of the game and provides a glimpse of the game after only a month of development. This is one of the earliest builds of the game and it is freely available on SteamVR. The soundtrack of the prototype consisted of just a single temporary song. The details of the release were posted by the developer Hyperbolic Magnetism-now known as Beat Games- on the indie games website itch.io.

The release was an early build so the prototype is not polished yet although according to the developer, the core is in place and the game is playable but only on SteamVR and with a PC. The Beat Saber Origins won’t have a user interface menu. Being an early build, there might be a few bugs, too, although it might as well be just fine.

The concept of Beat Saber involves the player holding two long energy blades that look eerily similar to the “Star Wars” lightsabers. Players use these energy blades to slash through blocks of matching colors representing musical beats to the rhythm of a song’s beats. The game is widely popular and has so far sold more than one million copies since it was launched, making it one of the most popular VR titles of all time.

The game has also racked up several awards and nominations. During the Game Awards 2018, it was nominated for the Best VR/AR Game. It also notched up awards for Best VR/AR Game during the Game Developer Choice Awards and the Immersive Reality Game of the Year during the 2019 DICE Awards.

In March this year, Beat Games released its first song pack dubbed “Monstercat Music Pack” which includes ten new tracks picked from an EDM Label of the same name. So far the music repertoire is mostly focused on electronic music but the developer is planning on expanding the range of music genres that will be available in-game.

The Beat Saber game will be coming with the Oculus Quest which ships from May 21. You can pre-order the headset for only $399.
